ESPN’s Adam Schefter was among the first to share the news on Sunday via Twitter/X.
White signed a deal with the Dolphins to be Tua Tagovailoa’s backup last offseason after he put together an impressive couple of starts with the New York Jets in 2022.
According to Spotrac, releasing White frees up $3.5 million for Miami, and leaves behind $1.71 million in dead cap.
White was solid in the preseason, as he completed 20 of 43 passes for 179 yards without a touchdown or interception. In the preseason finale, White completed 5 of 9 passes for 37 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. However, compared to Thompson, he led Miami in passing in two of three games and threw three touchdowns and only one interception.
Thompson capped off his preseason outing by completing 19 of 27 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dolphins selected Thompson in the seventh round with the No. 247 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The 27-year-old hails from Kansas State.
White is a former fifth-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 and signed to the Jets practice squad in 2019. In 2021-22, he became a brief fan favorite and locker room favorite as he was a breath of fresh air for the Jets and the fanbase.
White stepped up for an injured Zach Wilson at the time in 2021 to make his first career start and led the Jets to a stunning win over the Bengals, 34-31. The 29-year-old had his five minutes of fame with the Jets and completed 62.6 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
White has played in 14 games, started seven, and recorded a 2-5 record.
Before White was predominantly a backup in the NFL, he attended South Florida and Western Kentucky. In four college seasons, he recorded 863 completions for 11,262 passing yards and a completion percentage of 62.0 percent with 74 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.
White also won C-USA Newcomer of the Year in his first year at Western Kentucky and was named to the Second-team All-C-USA in his final college season. The Florida native will now look for another team and his fourth of his young career.
