Dog Has Heartbreaking Reaction to Suitcase, Then Realizes He’s Going Too

Instant dread overcomes dogs when the suitcase is pulled out of the closet because it usually means their owners will be going on a trip without them. But one dog’s mood immediately changed when he learned he wouldn’t be left home this time.

A golden retriever named Goose dramatically plopped down on the floor with his head between his paws in a November 2 TikTok video, pouting after his owners brought out the suitcases. Goose, like many dogs, understands the meaning behind luggage. He’s gone through it before—a packed suitcase means his owners are leaving.

An article from CVETS, an animal hospital in South Carolina, reported that dogs can make associations with luggage due to suitcases’ appearance and scent. These connections can either trigger positive or negative emotions.

If your dog does not typically travel with you, the suitcase might have them anxiously pacing around the house with puppy dog eyes or whining to come along. On the other hand, if you bring your dog with you, they’ll associate the suitcase with a trip. The back and forth will be for excitement instead of dread.

The clip, posted to the account @goldengoosetavo, showed Goose sitting in his feelings as he anticipated a few days without his humans. Viewers were set to revolt, saying they were “getting ready to call the authorities,” until they realized the owners weren’t leaving Goose behind this time.

The second part of the video shows Goose tagging along on the trip. His mood did a 180. His frown turned into the biggest smile as he sat in the backseat of the car. All that worry about his owners going on a trip without him washed away instantly. He was in heaven.

Newsweek reached out to @goldengoosetavo via TikTok for additional information.

The TikTok video amassed over 1.6 million views and 214,700 likes as of Thursday.

“He said, ‘Not gunna lie yall had me in the first half!!'” joked a TikTok user.

A second person added: “Goldens are so dramatic. I love them.”

Another wrote: “This baby just went from ‘Don’t even speak to me’ to ‘I’m just out here living my best life’ in 10 seconds.”

Some mentioned their dogs having similar reactions: “My poodle does this, little has she realized she comes everywhere on every vacation with us.”
