The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly been in pursuit of Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames for the last few months. Adames landed in free agency this offseason where he was heavily connected to the Dodgers as well as the New York Mets and New York Yankees.
It wasn’t any of these powerhouse teams that landed Adames though.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Adames has agreed to a deal with the Dodgers’ biggest rivals. Passan reports that Adames and the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a seven-year, $182 million deal in free agency.
Adames’ $182 million contract sets the Giants’ franchise record for the most total value in one contract. Who held the record before Adames? San Francisco’s new president of baseball operations and franchise legend Buster Posey.
Posey came back to San Francisco this offseason and was seemingly looking for a major change in the Bay Area. Posey was vocal about wanting to improve the team’s situation at shortstop and he dove into free agency to grab the best option available.
Adames was also reportedly being pursued by the Atlanta Braves alongside the Dodgers. The Mets and Yankees likely looked at him as a backup plan for whoever doesn’t land Juan Soto. Either way, Adames won’t be a backup plan and he won’t be moving over to third base in the near future.
He’s in San Francisco and he’s a shortstop.
Last season, the 29-year-old slashed .251/.331/.462 with 32 home runs and 33 doubles. He was worth 3.1 WAR.
