BLUE Bloods fans were in tears last night as they said goodbye to the cop drama after 14 seasons.
There was a brutal murder, a secret wedding and a baby announcement as the long-running show said a perfect farewell – though viewers are now demanding a spin-off to keep the Reagan family alive on screen.
The city’s establishment came under fire in the season closer.
While investigating the death of a New York judge, Eddie (Vanessa Ray) and her partner, Luis (Ian Quinlan), were gunned down.
In a coordinated attack, Mayor Chase (Dylan Walsh) was also shot by criminals on a motorbike.
While Eddie and the Mayor survived, Luis wasn’t as lucky and passed away in emotional scenes.
Before serious surgery, the Mayor gave Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) the keys to the city and told him to do whatever was necessary to regain law and order.
The city’s cops were quick to crack down on gangs after a deadly threat to continue attacking police if certain prisoners weren’t released.
The shooters were eventually caught and the Reagan’s celebrated with a family meal.
Show bosses weren’t cruel enough to add to the tragedy of Luis, death, and there were multiple uplifting moments.
With little fanfare, Erin (Bridget Moynahan) remarried her ex-husband Jack (Peter Hermann) though stopped short of telling their family as Eddie and Jamie (Will Estes) had just dropped the news they were going to be parents.
Tough cop Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) showed his softer side by asking his partner Baez (Marisa Ramirez) on a pizza date.
The developments certainly paved the way for future storylines, should a network decide to run with a spin-off.
One viewer wrote on X: “So many tears shed tonight during the Blue Bloods finale! Glad it ended on a happy note! Hoping for a spin off!”
Another posted: “Watched the very last episode of Blue Bloods. Started good, ending a little too soft. Think Danny and Maria finally hooked up when going for pizza. Eddie and Jamie having a kid, that be a great story. Bittersweet that it was the last episode. Spin-Off?????”
A third said: “Watched Blue Bloods faithfully, and we will miss it. We still watch the reruns on ION, and we hope it remains on there. That said, I am hoping that the rumors of a spin-off are true.”
Cast members are equally as upset.
In October, Tom Selleck told TV Insider: “I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.”
Earlier in the year Donnie and Bridget appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show and addressed the show’s shock cancellation by broadcaster CBS.
Host Drew said: “I think everybody’s really upset and sad, but also happy and satiated.”
Donnie responded: “More upset and sad, more upset and sad.”
Bridget said: “I think it’s more saying goodbye to the people behind the characters. We’ve created such a family on set with each other and the crew.”
“Most of the crew’s been with us for 14 years, so we’ve been through a lot of weddings, births, deaths, and everything. We’ve been through it all with each other.”
