David Ortiz made life tough for the New York Yankees during his 20-year Hall of Fame career. The Boston Red Sox legend continues to poke fun at his old rivals whenever the opportunity presents itself. Most recently, it happened in the comments section of outfielder Juan Soto’s Instagram.
Soto recently signed a record-breaking $765 million contract with the New York Mets after spending the 2024 season in the Bronx. The Red Sox were also among the finalists for the 26-year-old left-handed slugger, reportedly offering him a deal in the neighborhood of $700 million.
Ortiz was one of the baseball players Soto admired as a kid, which is likely a big reason why Ortiz took on a significant role in Boston’s recruiting efforts for the outfielder. While Ortiz is probably disappointed Soto won’t be calling Fenway Park his home, the three-time World Series champion must be elated he didn’t re-sign with the Yankees.
Soto posted a picture of himself in a Mets hat and jersey that was taken during his introductory press conference at Citi Field. The caption reads, “A new chapter begins,” with baseball and arm-flexing emojis. Jomboy Media took to X (formerly Twitter) to point out what Ortiz said in the comments.
“The……Yankees lose,” Ortiz wrote. He also added two laughing emojis.
Ortiz shares a stage with Álex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter during the regular season and playoffs as part of FOX Sports’ MLB coverage. He’s found some creative ways to troll the former Yankees while on the air. One would imagine that Soto opting for the Mets over the Bombers will just be more fuel for the fire in 2025 and beyond.
