Couple Buy 1900s Home, Find Incredible ‘Pieces of History’ While Renovating

Two new homeowners have shared some of the remarkable discoveries they’ve made while renovating their 1900s home.

Miranda and Cameron purchased their coastal home in Tynemouth, U.K., in March last year, and have always dreamed of renovating a property together.

With Miranda training to become an architect—she’s set to be fully qualified by September—the project was the perfect opportunity to bring their shared vision to life.

“The house was full of potential, and we were excited to make it our own,” Cameron, who didn’t give a surname, told Newsweek. “But we never expected to find such incredible pieces of history buried beneath the surface.”

Among their favorite discoveries were the original Victorian-era spindles, which were found hidden behind plywood sheets. “One morning, Miranda had a hunch that there was something behind them, so I grabbed a crowbar—and my phone—and recorded as we removed the plywood, and there they were,” Cameron recalled. “They’re so beautiful that we’ve decided to keep them.”

The couple’s enthusiasm didn’t stop there. They went on to uncover four-panel doors, a cast iron fireplace, and a collection of antique items, including health salt tins, chicory coffee and chocolate enamel tins, old Boots the Chemist medicine bottles, and even a local newspaper from decades past.

Reflecting on why these features were hidden, the couple said: “We think it’s just a reflection of changing tastes over the years. Every era leaves its mark, and styles evolve over time.”

The couple have been documenting their renovation journey on TikTok under the handle @hausonthetyne. More than 29,000 followers are watching their journey as they share house tours, before and after videos and their future plans.

A video featuring their favorite discoveries has gained more than 6 million views and prompted plenty of comments from people stunned that the features had been covered by previous owners.

Viewer Eleonora said: “Here in Italy, if a building is ancient, it’s illegal to do things like this and you have to preserve it. Why is not like this everywhere???”

While TikToker Seana was delighted by the couple bringing back the classic features in the old home: “I’m so tired of the white box era. Bring back architectural details!!”

“The reaction has been amazing and so positive,” Cameron said. “It’s been great interacting with everyone and finding out new things.”

As they continue their home renovation, the couple is excited to see what other secrets their 1900s home may hold—and to share them with their thousands of followers online.
