Colts News: Latest on Anthony Richardson’s Injury Status

The Indianapolis Colts have quarterback Anthony Richardson dealing with multiple injuries. Richardson has been dealing with hip and oblique injuries, which kept him out of Week 5.

Richardson got injured in Week 4 and was pulled from the game. However, he was allowed to return, resulting in a much more severe injury.

Backup quarterback Joe Flacco came in for Richardson in Week 4, throwing two touchdowns in the Colts’ victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Thankfully, Colts head coach Shane Steichen did not attempt to rush Richardson back in Week 5, and Flacco once again took over.

The Colts lost a narrow one to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5, losing on a last-second field goal with a 37-34 final score. Now, the Colts will look to bounce back against the Tennessee Titans in Week 6. The good news is they will do it with Richardson back in the lineup.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, “Colts QB Anthony Richardson, dealing with hip and oblique injuries, was a full participant in today’s practice. A sign he’s preparing to start this Sunday.”

Richardson is dealing with a hip and oblique injury, but he participated fully. That means he is trending towards starting without any issues on Sunday. Granted, there is one more injury report left to go, but it sounds like the signal caller is ready to go.

Richardson saw his 2023 season ended early when he was revealed to have suffered a Grade 3 AC joint sprain, which led to his being pulled after October.

Though Richardson has not dealt with the same injury in 2024, Week 4 was a bit concerning. The issue is Richardson is a mobile quarterback, but his mobility can often lead to his taking big shots.

Though the Colts greatly benefit from Richardson being able to throw the ball downfield with ease and also make plays with his feet, he needs to realize that extending a play should not come at the cost of his health.

The hope is the injuries Richardson is currently dealing with will not keep him out of more than just the one game that he has missed so far.

The good news is the Colts have a quality backup in Flacco, who is already 1-1 on the season. Through one and a half games, Flacco has thrown for 527 yards and five touchdowns.

Richardson is the starter, but should he be hit with another injury, Flacco will be called on once again to lead the team.
