Carlton ‘holding their breath’ in devastating Sam Walsh injury update

Carlton are holding their breaths on Sam Walsh’s immediate future in footy, with the All Australian on the brink of a second bout of back surgery before he turns 24.

The midfielder was an early scratching from the Blues’ first two games of the AFL season and is set to be reassessed during their Round 2 bye.

It was only 10 days ago that the Blues said he was “increasing loads as part of his modified training” but one Carlton trackwatcher has now painted a bleak picture of Walsh’s situation.

“I was told by someone at Carlton that watching him run is like watching an old man run,” 7NEWS Melbourne’s Mitch Cleary said on Talking Footy.

“Next week is crunch time for him, because when he attempts to bend to get the ball, tackle, kick — that is still a big challenge for Sam.

“If he doesn’t get through the next week or two, that’s when surgery will start to be discussed.

“We hold our breath and we hope the Blues can get one of their best players back. But the next week is a ‘hold your breath’ for the Blues.”

Walsh first went under the knife in December 2022 with a microdiscectomy — an operation to remove part of a bulging disc to relieve pressure on a nerve — and missed the opening rounds of the 2023 season.

It is unclear if that is the same operation he is facing again, with the Blues only divulging that he has been battling “back soreness”.

Meanwhile, Cleary also revealed the news on the Hawks’ reigning best-and-fairest winner Will Day that “every Hawthorn fans want to know”.

The 22-year-old was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot in January and ruled out indefinitely.

Time in a moon boot followed but he has since returned to running on the AlterG treadmill.

“It’s crunch time next week,” Cleary said.

“He’s got another bone scan next week, which will determine whether we see him in the next few weeks or (whether) that pushes through to mid-season.

“A big watch this space on Will Day.”
