Bubba Wallace Feeling the Pressure – ‘I Need to Portray the Best Race of My Career to Make the Playoffs’

Bubba Wallace, the iconic driver for 23XI Racing, is facing one of the most pressured moments of his NASCAR Cup Series career. As we edge closer to the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, Wallace faces the daunting challenge of delivering a face-melting performance to clinch a spot in the competitive 16-driver playoff field. Currently trailing by 21 points behind Chris Buescher and Ross Chastain, the game is on for the driver.

Wallace’s season has been a rollercoaster which has contrasted sharply with his teammate Tyler Reddick’s quest for the Regular Season Championship. Despite their differing fortunes, the teamwork between the two has been a significant asset.

Wallace has notched up top-10 finishes in four of his last five races. Yet, the elusive victory that would automatically secure a playoff berth has slipped through his fingers, making Darlington a very important race for him.

“They were just able to execute and be there for the end of races as to where, we were either caught up in somebody else’s mess or something would go south and we didn’t have an opportunity to better ourselves,” Wallace reflected, via NASCAR.

“So I look at the opportunity this weekend, looking at how fast we were in the spring, the 45 obviously (was a) winning car, and then we were top 10 kind of all day.

“We’ve worked on a lot of stuff this week in the sim to be better, and I’m excited just to show up and basically, I need to portray the best race that I’ve ever had in my career to make the playoffs. And I don’t say that from a desperation mode,” Wallace stated confidently.

“I say it as I’m confident in our team and our ability, as long as all the outside factors execute — an example, pit crew and strategy — then there’s no reason why we can’t be in Victory Lane at Darlington on Sunday. So that’s what we need to focus on, and that’s where we’re at.”

The racing star also commented on his mental and emotional preparation, which appears to be more resilient than in previous seasons.

“I’m stressed about being winless in damn near two seasons…but I think in the situation we’re at now compared to, let’s say this was Daytona last year or Bristol the (elimination) race, I have no stress compared to those last year,” Wallace observed.

The Cook Out Southern 500 is not just another race for Wallace; it could define his season. Known for its grueling demands, Darlington offers no easy passes, making it a fitting battleground for Wallace’s all-or-nothing showdown.

In the midst of all this, Wallace remains aware of the bigger picture and the need for an all-hands-on-deck approach.

“As long as all the outside factors execute — an example, pit crew and strategy — then there’s no reason why we can’t be in Victory Lane at Darlington on Sunday. So that’s what we need to focus on, and that’s where we’re at,” he concluded.
