The 2024 NFL season is about to begin, and that means there are about to be numerous cuts.

This includes the Buffalo Bills, who have already made 11 cuts in the preseason, including quarterback Anthony Brown, running back Frank Gore Jr., and linebacker Deion Jones.

According to a report from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, another name joining that list is defensive lineman Gable Steveson.

Earlier this year, Steveson signed a three-year deal with Buffalo to develop him into a defensive lineman despite never playing football before. While he has the strength, it seems he needs more time before he is an NFL-caliber talent.

Despite this, Steveson has an impressive pedigree as an amateur wrestler, taking gold at 2017 Junior World Championships, the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games.

Soon, Steveson would sign with the WWE who hoped to turn him into a Kurt Angle-type talent. Despite his freestyle background, his brief run in the company was marred by his lack of charisma and controversy.

On June 15, 2019, Steveson and a fellow Minnesota wrestler were suspended from all team activities and arrested on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct. However, it was revealed that neither would face criminal charges due to insufficient evidence.

“There are often conflicting versions of what happened and this case is no exception,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said to reporters. “In the interest of justice, there is inadequate evidence to fairly charge and prosecute this case.”

Freeman also insinuated alcohol could have been involved, saying that his office was restricted in the case due to current Minnesota laws on intoxication and “a victim’s ability to give consent.”

These charges would follow Steveson into the WWE. In his debut match against Baron Corbin on NXT The Great American Bash, the crowd booed Steveson and chanted, “You’re not Angle,” even though Corbin was meant to be the heel of the match.

Steveson would have one final match in WWE before being released by the company along with multiple other NXT wrestlers on May 3, 2024.

Despite being waived by the Bills, this may not be the end of Steveson’s journey in the NFL. He could still be brought back to Buffalo as a member of the practice squad, where he would be a developmental talent, or join another team.

That being said, it looks like the Gable Steveson experiment is over for now.
