In case you missed it, The Greatest Love Story Never Told premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Feb. 27 as part of the rollout for J.Lo’s ninth studio album, This Is Me… Now.
Over an hour and 26 minutes, the documentary gives viewers an inside look at Jennifer and Ben’s life as she works on her album and musical movie. However, numerous moments centered on their marriage and sparked concerns about how much J.Lo was willing to share about the relationship despite Ben’s desire to keep things private.
For example, in one instance, Ben is taken aback by Jennifer’s decision to show a group of aspiring musicians an extensive collection of private love letters he’d written to her over 20 years.
At another point, the Gone Girl actor emphasized that sharing his private life as part of J.Lo’s creative process was “something of an adjustment” for him, describing them as “two people with different kinds of approaches trying to learn to compromise.”
J.Lo even explicitly says in the doc that Ben wasn’t “comfortable” with how much of their life she was sharing with the public as she worked on the project.
On top of all this, the narrative surrounding Ben’s discomfort with the possible overexposure of their marriage was bolstered by accusations that he often looked “miserable” when he and J.Lo were out in public together.
But now, contrary to what the documentary may have suggested, a source has told People that it was actually Ben who encouraged J.Lo to bring cameras behind the scenes while she worked on the album.
In the same report, a subsequent source claimed that the documentary was “Ben’s idea” for his production company, Artists Equity, which he co-founded alongside Matt Damon in 2022.
Continuing to refute the narrative that Ben was opposed to airing their private lives in the doc, the first source suggested that he was heavily involved in the editing process and even “took it away from the director so he could have the narrative he wanted out there.”
Interestingly, while promoting the project earlier this year, Jennifer said it “wasn’t [her] idea” to make a documentary in addition to the movie and album.
Needless to say, conversations about The Greatest Love Story Never Told have ramped up again in the aftermath of the divorce. Billboard reported last week that the doc’s viewing figures on Prime Video increased by 3,000% in the 24 hours after J.Lo’s filing made headlines.
