Appetizer Recall Sparks Warning in 8 States

Multiple hush puppy products are being recalled by Atkinson Milling Company on Thursday over fears of an undeclared milk allergen.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the allergen was discovered during an “internal review” of the product’s label. Milk was not shown on the label as an ingredient or under the “contains” section, the agency says.

People with a milk allergy could experience potentially life-threatening or serious reactions if they consume the recalled hush puppies, the FDA warns. The dish is typically served as a deep-fried cornmeal dough appetizer with various fillings.

The recalled products include the 1-pound bag of hush puppies with onions carrying the UPC code of 0 72119 20718 2 and sell-by date of 7/24/26; the 2-pound, 8-ounce bag of the hush puppies with onions displaying a UPC code of 0 72119 20305 4 and sell-by date of 11/11/2026; and the 2-pound, 8-ounce bag of hush puppies with a UPC code of 0 72119 20304 7 and sell-by date of 10/16/2026.

Newsweek has reached out to Atkinson Milling Company via email on Thursday for additional comment.

The FDA says the affected product is in clear packaging and sold in stores in Georgia, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, New Jersey and South Carolina. The agency’s alert online displays pictures of the recalled products.

“Atkinson’s takes allergies and food safety seriously. We are sorry for this oversight and will continue to make strides to prevent this from ever happening again. We are deeply appreciative of each and every one of our customers,” the FDA alert says, adding that customers can return the product for a full refund where they purchased it.

Customers may also contact Atkinson at 1-800-948-5707 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET weekdays.

There have been other recalled products impacting stores across the country this month. A dog food recall was initiated on December 2, due to fears of possible salmonella contamination.

Pets with salmonella may run a fever, vomit or have diarrhea, the FDA says. “If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” the agency’s alert says.

Cucumbers have also been recalled, sparking a salmonella investigation by the FDA. In an update on Thursday, the agency says that the probe of the outbreak is ongoing, adding that it is weighing whether additional recalls are necessary.

The FDA posted a map showing the number of cases by state. Montana has 16, followed by Oregon and Colorado with seven to nine cases apiece. There have been 68 reported illnesses tied to the recalled cucumbers, with zero deaths, the agency says.
