COSTCO members have blasted the retailer after it installed a scanner which they say is a “violation” to short people.
Shoppers piled onto Reddit to mock the store after it placed a new scanner 6ft off the floor.
It isn’t exactly clear in which shop the scanner has been installed or if other outlets also have them.
However one person believed the store was in Queens, New York.
One user of the social media site started a thread under the title: “Got a new price checker mounted six feet off the ground” and add a face palm emoji for good measure.
People quickly jumped in to have their say and blast the store.
One person wrote: “Putting short people in their place.”
Another joked: “It only works on high prices.”
While a third added: “Lmao what in the f**k, I’m 6’1″ and would burst out laughing if I saw that, who the hell installed it? A resurrected Andre the Giant?”
A fourth commentator chipped in with: “I’m 4’11. How am I supposed to use this?!? Living in a world designed by tall men is so annoying sometimes!”
When someone raised the issue about how “frail and disabled people” were meant to use the scanner, another replied: “This was a mistake on the store’s part.”
Although some, no doubt tall people, welcomed the move.
One posted: “Finally something at eye level for us normal 6’5” adults.”
Another said: “Finally for tall ppl.”
And someone else wrote: “Perfect for me. 6’1””
The US Sun has contacted Costco for comment.
It comes after Costco opened a new store with shoppers going crazy at the wine selection that can’t be found anywhere else.
Wine lovers have flocked to the brand new Costco in Napa Valley, with the new branch housing the wholesaler’s “largest wine collection”.
The new Napa store has the largest wine selection of any Costco store across the US, and also houses a selection of rare spirits, including bottles of whiskey and premium tequila.
It follows after a new membership card policy has left Costco customers fuming.
Implementation of the update began at the end of August, with many stores gradually including it over the past few months.
Some members saw it appear at their local Costco store in Winter Springs, Florida, about 15 miles northeast of Orlando, earlier this week.
“At my local Costco, I discovered that entry is now conditional upon scanning a valid membership card,” fumed member Emilio Gonzalez in a post to Facebook.
He included a picture of the setup, which saw a barcode scanner at the front door with a sign that directed members to “scan membership here” before entering.
“I asked when this policy was instated, and the employee at the door responded that it took effect this Monday,” Gonzalez explained.
He noted that the policy would certainly weed out those shoppers who tried to sneak in without a membership, especially those headed to the warehouse retailer’s famous food court.
Costco’s membership scanners
Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances.
In August 2024, the retailer released a statement about the scanners on its website.
“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” it wrote.
“Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.
“Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.
“If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!
“If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop.
“Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID.
“We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card.”
