Hannah Einbinder’s Mom Poked The Bear With a Now-Deleted 19-Exclamation Point Critique at 2024 Emmys

Stars: They’re just like us, assuming we are also the offspring of an original cast member of Saturday Night Live and we were also nominated at the 2024 Emmys because we also-also co-star in Hacks.

Hannah Einbinder’s mom, Laraine Newman, posted an—ahem—mama bear-ish tweet about The Bear after Einbinder lost to that show’s Liza Cólon-Zayas in the best supporting actress in a comedy category. While we don’t know for sure whether Einbinder personally prompted Newman’s decision to delete the tweet shortly after, the feeling of having a parent who doesn’t have quite the same relationship with social media as their child is more than relatable.

Newman shared an impassioned, now-deleted tweet reading, “FUCK. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” complete with, count ’em, 19 exclamation points. Twenty would be over the top, obviously, but 18 surely would not be enough to convey how pissed she is.

Maybe she got a mortified text from her daughter (who did end up taking the stage alongside jubilant castmates after Hacks’ upset win over The Bear for best comedy to close out the night); maybe she just took another look at her timeline and went, “ooooh, maybe that was a smidge harsh,” but Newman deleted the tweet and replaced it with a gentler, more nuanced expression of her feelings: “I think the Bear is a great show but IMHO it’s not a comedy- not even a dark comedy.”

It’s a thought shared by many, including the show’s co-hosts, another fellow parent-child showbiz duo, Eugene and Dan Levy, with Eugene quipping during the ceremony that “in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.”

Newman also vented her spleen earlier in the evening, tweeting, “Every time I think about The Bear being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing.”

In response to another user asking her if her apocryphal F-bomb was “really necessary,” Newman replied, “I know. I took it down. Not my best moment.” complete with a sad-face emoji. We have no doubt she meant it.

After her tamer clarifying tweet, Newman appeared to shut down her Twitter machine for the night, but other Hacks fans celebrated the triumph. And surely, somewhere, Newman did too.

Representatives for Newman and Einbinder did not respond to Vanity Fair’s request for comment.
