Injured Dodgers Starter Throws Off Mound In First Steps Toward Eventual Return

The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a flurry of injuries in the 2024 season. Many of their star players have missed a good chunk of the season. While this has been the case, the Dodgers have done enough to keep their head above water, and even that’s an understatement.

Still, injuries have hurt the Dodgers, but the hope is that they won’t hurt them in October when the games really matter. L.A. has many players on the injured list who have started the season on there, including former All-Star right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin.

Gonsolin is recovering from an elbow injury; however, he threw off the mound on Sunday before the team’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times shared via Twitter/X.

Gonsolin was placed on the 60-day IL in early February. The 30-year-old is scheduled to miss the entire 2024 campaign while he is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

He underwent the surgery last August, and prior to the injury, Gonsolin had had a disappointing season. He finished the year with a 4.98 ERA in over 103 innings, 82 strikeouts, 5.43 FIP, a 1.22 WHIP, and an 8-5 record in 20 starts.

The Dodgers drafted Gonsolin in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. he made his MLB debut in 2019 and has been a constant presence in the Dodgers rotation since 2020.

Gonsolin’s best season as a Dodger came in 2022 when he was named to his first and only All-Star game thus far. In that season, he recorded an impressive 16-1 record with a 2.14 ERA, 188 ERA+, 3.28 FIP, and a 0.87 WHIP in 103.1 innings and 24 starts. Since that magical season, it has been a struggle for the California native.

Prior to the 2023 season, Gonsolin signed a two-year, $6.65 million contract to avoid arbitration. However, that’s when the injuries started to pile up. He suffered an ankle injury in spring training, which led him to start the season on the injured list, and his season ultimately ended with right forearm inflammation, which led to Tommy John surgery.

Gonsolin is just one of the many to suffer from a significant injury, including River Ryan, Emmet Sheehan, and Kyle Hurt, who all required Tommy John surgery. Dodgers right-handed flame thrower Dustin May is also out for the rest of the season because of flexor tendon and esophageal surgery.

The Dodgers have been plagued by injuries, yet they still have the best record in the major leagues as of Sunday.
