She revealed the secret to their youthful appearance in a post on Reddit’s Korean Beauty forum, which has over 235,000 members.

INCREDIBLE INGREDIENT

She said the Korean women in her family “look amazing for their age” and many people think her mom is “10-20 years younger” than she is.

As well as wearing sunscreen, her mom and aunts choose clothes that keep them covered and wear large hats to shield them from the sun.

“Most of them use a combo of Western and Korean skincare,” she said, writing under the handle heartsandspades_.

“Their fave Western brands are Clinique and Lancôme.

“Korean brands usually Sulwhasoo, Donginbi, Hanyul, or whatever’s trending at Olive Young or Aritaum when they go to visit.

“The Kahi wrinkle balm was a huge hit with them all a couple of years ago, for example.”

Despite having a selection of effective skincare products, the Redditor said a food ingredient is the key to their ageless appearance.

“What I will say that ALL of them use or eat religiously though is red ginseng,” she said.

“Not so much ginger. Sulwhasoo and Donginbi are some brands that have whole lines dedicated to ginseng.”

According to Healthline, research supports claims that the lightly-colored root grown in East Asia can be beneficial for reducing wrinkles, increasing collagen production, and reducing puffiness.

It can be consumed raw, lightly steamed, or as a dietary supplement in powder or capsule form.

Red ginseng can also be found in topical serums, moisturizers, toners, and cleansers, making it effective at any stage in skincare routines.

OLD HABITS

The Redditor revealed her relatives had previously been big fans of rice water but stopped using it when they moved from Korea to Canada.

She said genetics plays a role in aging alongside diet and using effective beauty products.

Having previously been a “sun worshipper” and only half Korean, she confessed her skin doesn’t look as young as her mom’s did at age 34.

“I’ve only really started taking care of my skin in like 2018 but whatever you start now will make an impact!” she said.

“I constantly get complimented on my ‘flawless skin,’ it is not flawless but it’s decent.”

Many people upvoted the post and began to debate if red ginseng would become the next must-have skincare ingredient.

Sulwhasoo has several ginseng products available at Sephora, with the cheapest being their First Care Activating Serum for Anti-Aging which costs $25.

Over 24,000 shoppers have liked the product, with one customer saying it made their skin “radiant” and another gushing about how it reduced the appearance of fine lines.
