Everyone knows that the key to making it in Hollywood is to have a nice smile. Tom Cruise’s teeth have wowed the big screen for more than four decades, but it’s no secret that he’s done some work on those pearly whites.
The Mission Impossible actor had a very natural smile when he first started acting in Endless Love. The actor sported an overbite and is front teeth is misaligned so that one of them is directly in the middle of his mouth . Even after doing his own stunts in multiple Mission Impossibles, none of those acts managed to break his teeth or his smile. So what did he do to his teeth?
What happened to Tom Cruise’s teeth?
Tom Cruise‘s breakout role in The Outsiders showed his character Steve Randle sporting a disheveled smile with a noticable front tooth part missing. He reportedly voluntarily removed the cap from a front tooth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match. The tooth appeared discolored as well.
In 2002, the Top Gun star sported braces after his divorce from Nicole Kidman. His dentist suggested he wear them after taking his kids Connor and Isabella to their appointments. The actor wore it for about a year, with his publicist at the time Pat Kingsley telling The New York Post that the doctor saw that his bite was out of alignment. On The Late Show with David Letterman, Cruise joked, “I couldn’t close my mouth properly for years, so they finally said, ‘please, shut your mouth.’”

His teethwork didn’t stop with braces. According to The New York Post‘s former Editor in Chief Col Allan, Tom Cruise’s teeth fell off in front of him during a dinner. “They bought a house in the Village, and they wanted some privacy and they were worried about Page Six,” Allan recalled in an episode of the docuseries Gossip. “So Tom wanted to have a drink with me, and you know, talk about his expectations.”
“And we’re drinking and talking, and the next thing I know,” the journalist said, “both of his front teeth fell out onto the table cloth right in front of me.” Allan felt “speechless” at the time: “I mean, this is a face that’s on posters all over the world, good looking guy and there are his front teeth.” Cruise explained that the teeth fell out after his kids kicked it out when he was playing with them. Allan vowed never to publish the story, but he did reveal it to the world when the docuseries was released. Who knows if we’ll ever hear the truth from Tom himself?
