American sprinter Noah Lyles will not compete in the men’s 4-by-100-meter relay race at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Lyles was not part of the U.S. relay team that won its heat Thursday. Lyles competed in the men’s 200-meter final instead and finished third despite having dealt with symptoms of COVID-19 the previous two days.
Lyles claimed the bronze medal in the men’s 200 three years after doing the same at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His time of 19.70 seconds trailed only Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo (19.46 seconds) and fellow American Kenny Bednarek (19.62).
In a live interview with NBC Sports after the race, Lyles said he first tested positive for COVID-19 Tuesday morning, after he claimed the gold medal in the men’s 100-meter final.
