Torrie Lewis’ first solo Olympics campaign has come to an end with a seventh-place finish in the 200m semi-finals in Paris.
The 19-year-old Australian sprinter set a personal best in the heats on Sunday and won her repechage on Monday afternoon (Monday night AEST), ensuring she would come out again hours later (Tuesday morning AEST) to race for a spot in the final.
But while she impressed with a time of 22.92 seconds — just 0.03 off her new personal best set in the heats — double duty took its toll.

Lewis had a strong start but had work to do after the turn and finished in the middle of a tight battle for sixth, seventh and eighth.
“Not bad when you consider she had to come out this morning which is unlike what a lot of the other athletes had to do,” Tamsyn Manou said on Nine.
“She’s super young so she doesn’t have the maturity in her legs like the seasoned athletes to be able to do that.”
Manou praised Lewis for her singular focus on beating a nearby rival in the back half of the race.
“She gets out well, she tries to work through the field and as she comes off that bend it looks like they’re going to run away but I love that she kept boxing on,” the former star said.
“She was desperate to get just one athlete, and this experience watching athletes she would’ve looked up to, knowing what she needs to do in the next four years to catch up to them is invaluable.
“We have to keep saying to ourselves she’s 19 years of age and she’s running with the best in the world in senior athletics.
“She’s got the world under-20s in a month’s time and that’s where she’s going to get to run against her peers. But it’s been fantastic.”
Lewis will now rest and recover before returning to the track with Australia’s record-setting relay team.
Prior to the race the Olympics world feed commentator noted Lewis’s potential.
“She’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future,” he said.
Meanwhile, Australian Rose Davies finished 12th in an epic 5000m final where an incredible gold was won by Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet and a compatriot lost silver after a late disqualification then won it back on appeal.
“I’m really happy. My goal was just to make the final and I did that,” Davies told Nine.
“I wanted to give it everything I could, I think I did that so I can walk away happy.
“I just wanted to follow the pack as much as I could. The last two laps I was stinging but I held on as best I can. There’s always things to work on but I’m happy.”
Chebet was fourth after 4000m and sent the crowd while when she stormed home to finish one second clear of Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon as Netherlands star Sifan Hassan rounded out the podium.
In a dramatic turn of events, Kipyegon was initially disqualified for a clash with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, who finished eighth, earlier in the race.
That promoted Italy’s Maria Battocletti into bronze in a flood of tears.
However, Tamsyn Manou believed Kipyegon had a case to argue Tsegay was in the wrong — and the Australian great was on the money.
Kipyegon’s appeal was successful and she was reinstated as the silver medallist ahead of Hassan, with Battocletti’s emotional celebration wasted as she moved back into fourth.
