Kyle Guy, who spent three seasons in the NBA with the Miami Heat and Sacramento Kings, has retired from basketball at the age of 26.
Guy is returning to his alma mater, the University of Virginia, as the Athlete Development Mentor/Special Assistant, the school announced in a press release on Wednesday.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kyle and his family back to Charlottesville,” Virginia Men’s Head Basketball Coach Tony Bennett said. “Kyle is not only one of the best players I’ve ever coached, but also one of the finest young men I’ve met. He will make an immediate impact on our program, working with our players and sharing the expertise and competitive fire he’s gained throughout his collegiate and professional career.”
Guy also made a statement in the release.
“C’ville I am back!” Guy said. “I want to sincerely thank Coach Bennett and Carla Williams for trusting me with the opportunity to come back and begin this next chapter of my life. This was not an easy decision for me, but knowing how much love I have for this culture and community made it very clear where I should be with my family. I’m beyond excited to help this team and the University in any way needed. I’m also excited for my kids to see the work never stops! Fail harder!”

Guy spent three years at Virginia from 2016-19. He was a two-time All-American, two-time All-ACC First-Team honoree, and a part of the 2018-19 National Championship team. Guy was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player after averaging 19.5 points at the 2019 NCAA Final Four. Guy currently ranks first at Virginia in career 3-point percentage (42.5 percent) and 27th in scoring (1,323 points).
After Virginia, Guy was selected by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Kings and signed a two-way contract in Sacramento. Across 34 games with the Kings, he scored a total of 91 points.
Guy then appeared in 19 games with the Heat in the 2021-22 season, averaging 3.9 points per game. Guy spent the last two seasons overseas in Spain and Greece. His final professional season was his best, as he averaged a career-high 14.3 points per game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 38 percent from deep for Tenerife of Liga ACB in 2023-24.
Now, he’s concluding his playing career and heading back to his alma mater to help their basketball program.
