The Chiefs say Mahomes is questionable to return due to an ankle injury.
Mahomes suffered a lower leg injury in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ Week 15 game against the Cleveland Browns. With the Chiefs up 21-7 — and well on their way to their 13th win of the season — Mahomes limped off the field after taking an awkward hit. Mahomes was hit both high and low, and his legs bent behind him. Here’s a video of the play:
With the Chiefs up two scores in the fourth quarter, Mahomes was able to come out of the game while not putting the potential victory in jeopardy. However, there’s immediate concern for the superstar quarterback as the Chiefs play two more games in the next 10 days.
Who Do the Chiefs Play Next?
On Saturday, Dec. 21, the Chiefs have a massive game against the Houston Texans, who moved to 9-5 on the year with a win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Then, just five days later, the Chiefs play the 10-3 Pittsburgh Steelers in a special edition of the NFL on Christmas Day on Dec. 25. The Steelers are looking for their 11th win Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs, of course, want Mahomes to be able to suit up for both of those crucial AFC bouts. However, they also need him healthy for the playoffs, with the Wild Card round beginning in just a few weeks.
Who is the Chiefs Backup Quarterback?
Carson Wentz replaced Mahomes in Sunday’s game. He would be the starter for Kansas City in the event Mahomes isn’t able to go this Saturday in their Week 16 matchup. However, Mahomes is extremely tough, and will do everything he can to be ready to go for this Saturday’s game.
In relief of Mahomes on Sunday, Wentz completed both of his pass attempts for 20 yards. Those were his first two completions of the season, as the Chiefs have played close games just about every week.
The next big update will come from head coach Andy Reid after the game. Then, the Chiefs’ injury report will be a huge topic of conversation for the next few days.
