A Reddit user pointed out that their local Costco’s propane station wasn’t there anymore.

Confused, they said that maybe it got moved to the back side, but “that just doesn’t make sense”.

The user added: “Anyone else notice theres is gone?

“I never used it, but just was curious.”

The post accumulated a dozen comments, with other users confirming the propane fill station outside Costco no longer exists.

One comment read: “Yeah, most stores have switched the tank swaps instead of refilling so stores have been getting rid of the refill stations.”

Another confirmed the news too, saying: “The line of people waiting for refills was always a good half dozen, and most of them were unhappy to see the signs posted that the station would be shutting down.”

And someone else confirmed that this was the case, posting a picture that was put at a station.

It read: “Attention members – Please be advised that our location will be decommissioning our propane station in the coming weeks.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.”

Costco’s New Membership Policy: A ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ for Shoppers?

It is unclear whether this is every Costco store across the US or just ones in specific locations.

It comes after Costco shoppers have once again called for the chain to follow in the footsteps of its rival by rolling out a new checkout policy.

And, if it comes to pass, it would make self-checkouts redundant.

Shoppers have lashed out at forums like Reddit to complain about in-store experiences.

Also, members have encountered problems when it comes to self-checkouts.

Shoppers have lamented how self-checkout lanes are slow and that it takes longer.

Customers have been quick to suggest solutions to the renowned wholesale chain.

“They need mobile checkout,” one shopper said.

“The self-checkout isn’t any faster, and they don’t impose an item limit.

“They need to adopt Sam’s Club mobile cart and checkout asap.”

Costco’s membership scanners

Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances.

In August 2024, the retailer released a statement about the scanners on its website.

“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” it wrote.

“Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.

“Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.

“If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!

“If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop.

“Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID.

“We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card.”
