The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to shake up their roster this winter. All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm is a prime candidate to be moved after he struggled during Philly’s abbreviated postseason run. Could president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski use him to land starting pitcher Luis Castillo and more from the Seattle Mariners?
Bohm could provide a much-needed boost for Seattle at the hot corner after a solid 2024 campaign. He posted a career-high .779 OPS with 15 home runs, 44 doubles, 97 RBI and 62 runs scored in 606 plate appearances.
Castillo would be a welcome addition to the Phillies’ rotation. He’d likely replace Taijuan Walker, who posted a 7.10 ERA in 83 2/3 innings during his second season of a four-year, $72 million contract. Castillo has posted a 3.48 ERA with a 1.13 WHIP, 394 strikeouts and one All-Star Game selection in 372 1/3 innings since signing a five-year, $108 million extension with the Mariners ahead of 2023.
What could a swap between Seattle and Philadelphia look like? Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer put together the following hypothetical trade:
– Phillies receive: right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo and shortstop Cole Young
– Mariners receive: third baseman Alec Bohm
“A Castillo-for-Bohm swap would free up valuable money Seattle could use to pursue other needs. Young would be a sweetener for the Phillies, and he could even replace Bohm at third base at some point in 2025,” Rymer wrote.
MLB.com ranks Young as Seattle’s second-best prospect. He spent his 2024 campaign in Double-A, slashing .271/.369/.390 in 552 plate appearances.
