KANSAS City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes refused to leave Monday Night Football – despite a major injury scare.
The two-time MVP was captured arguing on the sideline with coach Andy Reid during Monday’s game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Mahomes threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns as the Chiefs beat the Bucs 30-24 after overtime.
It continued the team’s remarkable start to the season as they improved to 8-0.
But following an injury scare, Mahomes was forced to overrule his coach in the second half at Arrowhead Stadium.
Mahomes was forced into the blue medical tent after appearing to roll his ankle after throwing a score to Samaje Perine.
The 29-year-old returned to the sideline a short while later, with cameras catching Reid suggesting he come out of the game.
“Are you good? Want me to take you out?” Reid asked his star quarterback.
“No,” came the firm response, “No, c’mon man.”
Mahomes trotted gingerly out onto the field before helping the Chiefs stage a stirring comeback.
He finished with a passer rating of 116.8 and threw for three touchdowns for the first time this season.
Mahomes and Reid had a similar sideline interaction in 2023 during the NFL playoffs.
The Chiefs QB had gone down with a similar ankle injury, but on that occasion, Reid was firm with his star that he was “taking him out.”
“I thought he was joking,” Mahomes told reporters after Monday’s game.
“He said it and I was like, ‘Come on. We’re not doing this again.’
“He trusts me and once the doctors checked it out and I was able to get back and do the drops again, he let me get back on the field.”
“I told him I was going to take him out, and he wanted to fight me,” laughed Reid.
“Andy don’t even argue anymore,” laughed one NFL fan after the footage went viral on TikTok.
“Back up Qb was praying on bro sitting out that play,” chuckled a second.
“Andy Reid lowkey feeds off that energy. They aren’t champs for no reason,” added a third.
The Chiefs are aiming for a historic threepeat this season after winning the past two Super Bowls.
In Week 10, they welcome the 5-4 Denver Broncos to Arrowhead.
