A member of the Facebook group Retail Dead or Alive went online to mark the occasion.

Along with a photo of the store, they wrote: “Today was the last day for Stop and Shop in Halifax, MA.

“Several others in the state have also closed or will close in the coming weeks.”

One person added in the comments: “When they don’t update the store you know time was running low.”

Another said: “It’s a failing chain. No, it probably won’t liquidate, but it just can’t seem to get its act together.

“It’s a really unpleasant place to shop, with vast stores that charge too much and then force you to wait in long lines to get out of there.”

While a third commented: “This store must not be more than 20 years old?”

With the person who made the original post replying: “I did ask an employee that same question.

“He said he thinks it was open for 15 to 20 years. Also stores in Pembroke, Raynham and Brockton also closed.”

Stop & Shop previously announced it would shut 38 locations, but some closed their doors earlier than expected.

All the affected stores were earmarked to close by November 2, 2024.

The closures are part of the company’s growth strategy, and it will continue to operate more than 350 stores across five states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey.

The decision is part of efforts to focus on growth through price investments, stronger customer value, and store remodels. The company has completed over 190 remodels since 2018.

Company President Gordon Reaves previously said: “Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores.

He added the closures were “to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”

Stop & Shop will offer impacted employees positions in other locations.

There were five locations shutting down in Connecticut, including Ansonia, Torrington, Stamford, Milford, and Danbury.

In Massachusetts, branches in Brockton, Raynham, Plymouth, Shrewsbury, Newton, Springfield, Worcester, Pembroke, also closed.

Edison, South Edison, Howell, Phillipsburg, Piscataway, Carlstadt, Franklin Township, and Ringwood closed in New Jersey.

Six Stop & Shop outlets closed in New York included Brooklyn, Greenvale, West Haverstraw, Coram, Hempstead, and Mt. Vernon.

And in Rhode Island, branches in Johnston and Providence also closed for good.
