There are some weeks where reality TV is the perfect distraction to some of the more chaotic news taking up the airwaves (did you know there’s an election going on?), and guess what? This week was one of those weeks, and because of that, we’ve got not one, but two big interviews for your recap of the best in reality TV this week.
Before we get into it, make sure you’re subscribed to the For the Culture newsletter for all things entertainment and to the Parting Shot Podcast with H. Alan Scott for celebrity interviews and reactions to what’s going on in pop culture and how it interacts with politics and news. Also, spoilers abound below, read at your own risk.
Do you remember that viral video from E!’s House of Villains involving Real Housewives of New Jersey‘s Teresa Giudice and Survivor‘s Richard Hatch? Giudice being Giudice asked Hatch about his sexual preferences in bed (listen, these are the distractions we need, okay?), and well, Hatch told Newsweek that encounter “changed my life.” We chatted with Hatch about that moment and where he thinks his game went wrong before he was voted out of the House of Villains house. House of Villains airs Wednesdays on E!
While we’re on Survivor players, I also chatted with the latest person voted off the island, Rome, who had a particularly controversial game. (You can watch my chat with Rome in the video in this story.) And this week on Survivor was the episode every fan is waiting for, the marge. This is where the tribes come together as one and the game really picks up, because now it’s an individual game. Survivor airs Wednesdays on CBS.
On The Golden Bachelorette, we’ve got some hometown dates going down. Joan has her pick of Jordan, Pascal, Chock and Guy, and it’s on these hometown dates that helped Joan figure out who to send to home. (It’s gotta be hard to show off Joan to your family and then have her not choose you in the end. It’s like, was something wrong with my family?) Well, Jordan is the one who didn’t get the rose. That leaves Pascal, Chock, and Guy left to win over Joan’s heart. Joan could have given out two roses, so it says something that three are still in the mix. The Golden Bachelorette airs Wednesdays on ABC.
It’s Barbie night on the The Masked Singer, and it’s clear the judges are fully living in fantasyland with some of their guesses. Names like Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr., and Serena Williams were thrown out. This isn’t meant to be shady, but do we really think Serena Williams would agree to wear a mask and a furry costume and sing? Like, for real? In the end, Chess Piece was on the bottom and forced to unmask and reveal themselves to be… Emmy-winner Laverne Cox. The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays on Fox.
This week’s theme on Dancing With the Stars is always a fan favorite: Disney night! The stars did dances themed to things like Tarzan and Deadpool, but there was one dancer that just didn’t make the cut: Phaedra Parks of Real Housewives of Atlanta fame. (Parks had hoped to break the Housewives curse on Dancing With the Stars and make to the end, but alas, the curse remains in place.) Dancing With the Stars airs Tuesdays on Disney+ and ABC.
Well, Love Is Blind happened, and most said ‘I do.’ With the series finale, of the remaining couples, only Ramses Prashad and Marissa George split before their big day and called off their engagement. All in all this was a good season, but lacked in some of the drama I selfishly enjoyed in past seasons.
We’re finally over the audition phase of The Voice, and now we’re in the midst of a real competition. The battle between Team Gwen Stefani’s Gabrielle Zabosky and Frankie Torres was the highlight of the night. Zabosky and Torres wowed everybody, making Stefani’s decision very difficult. Ultimately Stefani chose Zabosky. This led to a nail-biting moment where it wasn’t clear if any of the captains would use their steal and save Torres. At the very last moment Reba McEntire used her steal, saving Torres. (The drama!) The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC.
